VLC update adds 4K video playback

article published on 26 September, 2013

VideoLAN, the group behind the popular open-source video playback app VLC, has updated the platform to version 2.1. With the new update, the group has improved audio processing, most notably adding full support for surround sound output. In addition, 2.1 adds 4K video playback support, although the group warns that it is in its early stages. Finally, VLC for Android and iOS have ... [ read the full article ]

This is one of my favorite programs, nice to see the people behind it keep updating it.

Anyone that hasn't used/tried it... Shame on you, you are missing out on a great audio/video player.

Dose it still have a sucky GUI? :P

Copyright infringement is nothing more than civil disobedience to a bad set of laws. Lets renegotiate them.

Does this one crash every time you try to use it on Win 7 64?
I had to roll back to an old version with the last update (and this after using software to completely remove the old stuff).

Bugger that. VLC is still a buggy mess, and furthermore, its resizing algorithms are terrible.

I have been using VLC as my only video player for quite some time. But I'm using an older version. An update or two ago VLC was "improved" by making it less easy to use. With the version I'm using the playback speed control, settings tab and everything I use are always shown at the bottom of the screen. With the newer versions you have to open a menu to get to any of the controls. Luckily Google still lists all older versions of the program.

I usually use MPCHC, but I have been meaning to try VLC again. I recall liking certain features, but there were a multitude of problems too. This was quite some time ago though...

To delete, or not to delete. THAT is the question!

The one area where VLC consistently shines, in my opinion, is playback of partially-downloaded (for previewing on eMule/other P2P, for example) and/or damaged video. Beyond that, the persistent bugs and horrible interface repel me.

Never had a problem with bugs or crashes makes me think you are talking about a different program. :)

The interface is skinnable but I don't care as I just use the almost more than comprehensive hotkeys, the most important are mapped to my x360 controller anyway.

VLC is the only player I use nowadays (apart from blu-ray unfortunately)and the odd format like .tp (because it's not quite as good) but it always plays everything without hassle as far as I'm concerned.

Its a lot easier being righteous than right.
