Hi, spent over an hour trying to find an answer so I thought I would start a new thread. I have been using dvd shrink and dvd decrypter and since my first burn, everything was working perfectly. Then my dvd player died :o( and I went out to buy a new one. As we have surround sound, I had to take the first one back as I bought a 2.1 channel. So off we went again and this time got a 5.1 channel and my husband spent ages hooking it all up. However, it wont play any of my backups which played in my other one. It keeps skipping and displays pixels. So, it looks like this one is too sensitive, going on the info on other posts. I guess I will have to take this one back too as I do not want my existing backups to become coasters. How can I know when I buy a dvd player, that it will play my existing backups? I am currently using Ritek G04's dvd-r, but would prefer something that plays both + and -.

Hi Kathy:
Most of the new players say right on the box what what formats they will play. But what I would do would take some of your back ups to the store and see if they will play on there display units.

Yes, I think I will have to take a backup with me. I am mainly worried about getting another one that is too sensitive. I guess there is no way to know until I play a backup.

In all honesty there is no way of knowing what will work. As Jetster stated take a random crop of disks - ones you know are messing up and try them in the shop - if they will let you.
There are so many brands of Media/DVD Players/Burners that the final DVD is a mongrel for want of a better way of describing it. Chances are you could buy the same player again and it will work or swap for a different brand and it wont.
My Pioneer will not play DVD's that are backed up from an NEC burner. The exact same disks Burned on a Pioneer work fine?!?!
I don't know what I am doing.

Yes, this is the problem, it needs to fit with my combination, I could be up for many exchanges trying to find the right one. Most of the ones on display were not hooked up to a tv either, so it would be difficult even if they did allow me to play my backups. My burner is an LG. I couldn't find the same brand I already had (it was a cheapie, but worked well).

kathie999, I purchased a Coby223 from Fry's (cheap price 30 bucks on saleI think reg price was 40.) It's Progressive scan and plays all my backups even the ones that would not play in my other 3.I don't know about ths 5.1 as it's not here in my home it's at work. I'll try to remember to look and see about that part.

Maybe you could fins a store that allows you to 'try before you buy', that way you could take them and try them..................
Otherwise, takes some of your dvd's, a chair, a couple of cold ones and a mobile phone (for pizza) and hop on down to your local store and settle in for a nice movie session - you could smooth talk the manager before hand by suggesting to sell tickets (but beware of possible copyright infringement)..............Have fun..............
...............PIO is no go, DMA all the way...............
Beware of the Pixies - they move in over night and turn your life upside down

Hi all, problem solved. It was because I cheaped out that I had this problem. And also an idiot sales assistant that didnt know what they were talking about. Apparently, the one I bought doesnt play all types of media although there was no indication of this on the box. I ended up getting an LG player (same as the burner) and it works great. This time the sales assistant knew everything there was to know and although it cost a bit more - it was definately worth it. Thanks all for your help.
