avi to mpeg using cucusoft / ifoedit but jerky playback on dvd player ?

hi everyone.
before i finally give up trying to convert and burn an avi into a watchable dvd movie and buy one of those dvd players that play avi files, can anyone sugest what i might be doing wrong.
first the avi file plays fine using win media player. i then convert it to mpeg using cucusoft avi to dvd software v4.02 and then to vob files using ifoedit. this takes about 6 hours in total. i then burn the dvd using nero 6 but when i play it the film has a slight pause every few frames all through the movie. this has happened with both films i have tried using this method. the films are watchable but its annoying.
by the way if i play the vob files from my hard disk using power dvd it still has this pause in it so it isnt nero or the media i am using.
any ideas please.
