switch vs router configuration for torrent, not working

Hi there, I use a D-Link DSS 5+ switch and pay a but load for my internet connection which they say is capable of 750 k upload and 4 meg download. I've read a million FAQ's and threads ni here on how to configure ports for the xp firewall. It seemed to help a bit but when i open those ports my internet for any other program (IE, ouotlook, msn) craaawls so slow. I went to D-link website on how to configure switch but there are no instructions? is this even possible? i dont know the difference between a switch or a router.

My system specs are:
Asus P4P800 SE
dual 3 gig intel 4 processors
1 gig Ram
XP pro

I understand how torrent works and how seeds work and what not but with they system I have and the connection I pay for maxxing out at 40k or averagin 5k
just doesnt seem right.

ANy help would be greatly appreciated
