I use DVD Decrypter to rip and I'm quite happy. However my pioneer 107 is capable of reading at 12X but DVD Decrypter maxes out at about 5X. I tried increasing the read rate with no success. Does anyone know the secret to this or is this imposable?

Normal.
12x is your theoretical maximum.
Reaching it is like finding a hard drive that actually transfers @ 100MB/second - you won't (maybe, half that).
I find my 16x DVD tops out at about 10MB/second.
It never goes above 8x (in Smartripper).

Rip speed will also depend on whether it's a single or dual layer DVD. My Lite-On 166s has a max speed of 16x, but in reality it never reaches that peak on anything but a single layer disc. For single layer discs the average rip speed is around 9x-10x, usually with a peak speed between 14x and 16x. On dual layer discs the average drops to 6x-6.5x and the peak to between 9x and 11x.
