For the first time ever, the U.S. music industry has seen a decrease in digital music sales. Digital track sales as well as digital album sales fell for the year 2013. Can't entirely blame the streaming media companies; this year hasn't exactly spawned a lot of memorable music. Maybe a few one hit wonders, but not a whole lot that was appealing enough to purchase (or even pirate).

Misleading article ... the music companies are still as profitable as ever .. but the revenue is coming from different sources now i.e. advertising and subscriptions.

Digital music sales have declined slightly, but no mention of profits eroding ... the industry is just going through another change :)
