Trouble recognizing regular 700 meg cdr media

I have a Pioneer DVR 104 that reads DVDs fine, but will not read regular CDR media. When it tries to read the disc, system switches to a blue screen saying that this application will be terminated. hit and button to return. I get the desktop but can't open explorer or any other programs. The system just locks up til i reboot.
Any help for this?
