DDoS attack on Sony has taken down the PlayStation Network, Sony still working on it

article published on 24 August, 2014

The Sony PlayStation Network remains down thanks to a DDoS attack earlier this morning. Hacking group 'Lizard Squad' claimed credit for the attack, which has flooded the massive network with data and taken down legitimate services. @scorpNZ - This is going to be tricky to reply too, but you had peaked my curiosity to see if I can find out any information on subscriber numbers for both PSN and XBL.

PS+ - At minimum 5 million + as stated back in May that over half of PS4s sold (currently at 10 million units) have PS+ accounts. Factor in PS3 owners that do not own a PS4 and there's quite a bit more, likely over 10-20 million at best guess; but Sony never reports the numbers, nor does MS.

XBL - Reported at 46 million a year ago but no word since Xbox One release. Mind you EVERY Xbox required an XBL account whether it was Gold or Silver and since the article didn't separate who actually paid for Gold service, it's a bit of stretch to say 46 million all have XBL Gold.

Conclusion - No doubt there is multi-million users on both services and neither one is inferior to other. Back when XBL started and into the start of 360 era, it was no doubt the superior service, but today; not so much. Both get hacked or attacked as easily as the other; in fact Lizard also DDOS attacked XBL which still experienced issues the next day.

That said, both are inferior to the likes of active Steam accounts, when looking at the numbers which is closer to 100 million, if not surpassed that mark.

Yeah steams pretty massive & started quite a while ago it seems, its a good thing they're here still as there's been a few game delivery platforms that have fallen over & they've been here to pick up the slack & have games transferred to their delivery system,Ive got a few games that originally used gamespy before it was closed down & have some others who servers are now defunct, thankfully i don't bother with online gaming anymore so no biggie except i would've liked to have any updates for those games,i've had the games for a while only this year installed them still yet play em

It would be pretty near impossible to ddos on all the sony servers as they aren't located in one place,i assume nothings changed since i was on last so there'd be independent servers located AU servers for NZ & Australia,American servers, british servers,German,Swiss,Portuguese & Japan all of which are independent of one another, then there's games that are not served by sony like EA unless that's changed

Article was published at 2pm EST 8/24, Under 2 hours after Sony confirmed downtime but 8 hours after initial downtime reports.

The funniest part of the attack is the "waves of cash not spending on PSN" part. Sony has lost billions of dollars over the past 5 years, and is nowhere near profitable.

The complaints about poor network was the reason many left for xbox live back in 05 & onwards In NZ & Australia. Obviously it wasn't the only reason there was halo franchise amongst other top titles at the time & very few kiddies. On the face of it the xbox live servers seemed far less laggy ; however in looking back i firmly believe the lag was more hardware software related (as i stated earlier games lagged offline)& possibly connection speeds were getting better.
My nephew when he stayed for a few weekends (around 2008 ?-2012)& used his PS3 i was surprised at how very little lag there was; whether on i think it was battlefield bad company or any other sony game he played online especially when rooms (multiplayer games) had large numbers which was always an issue on the ps2

Didn't MS use P2P instead of main servers? That's why XBL was always shit when you played peeps outside your country. At least, that's the way it was in Oz.

Its a lot easier being righteous than right.
