LG unveils world's first 4K OLED TV, extravagantly priced at over $11,000

article published on 25 August, 2014

LG has announced the launch of the world's first 4K OLED TV, available in 65 and 77-inch models (models 65EC9700 and 77EG9700, respectively). The OLEDs will have curved panels, use the company's own proprietary Four-Color Pixel WRGB technology and "33 million sub-pixels working to produce the most lifelike colors and infinite contrast ratio." Self-lighting pixels also "guarantee" dark ... [ read the full article ]

I was thinking the same thing. If they want to make it a game changer... How about making 40-46 in models and sell them in the $2000 range. You would definitely sell more of them.

I'm out.

Companies that make panels tend to introduce their exorbitantly priced halo/flagship products first, to make a PR splash, and in the hopes that a few who can actually afford these types of products will buy them, becoming early adopters.

Then after a few hardware/firmware revision cycles in the wild, the trickle-down aspect of production will begin to target the appropriate consumer price range. Also, this way if there is something majorly wrong with the hardware that Q/A didn't catch in a "sterile" environment, they have munch, much fewer units to warranty/service, than if they were to instantly flood the market with sub-65 inchers.

It is exciting though, that OLED R&D has continued, and that within a few years they will begin to compete with the best LED-LCD panels. The dwindling few who still make plasmas probably see the writing on the wall.

***tips hat to the exit of legends PIONEER, and Panasonic from the plasma arena***

Only Samsung and LG are left in that space, unless I am mistaken.

TVs I own and love: Samsung UN55B8500 , Pioneer PRO-151FD, Panasonic TC-P65ZT60

I bet my bottom dollar that these will be under 2500.00 by the time that 4K tv is practically implemented and used more widely..............in let's say............another 6-7 years.

I do believe Samsung is exiting the plasma scene as well.

How about make this TV bigger... 85" for 10K will be ok.

We've been trying to re-introduce OLED panels to the consumer market for the last five years but it's a tough sell. Ten years ago we (mfgr's) all thought we would have stopped using LCD by now and moved on to OLED or SED. Blame politics and lawyers more than anything else. Back in 2010 every mfgr was showing a 50"-55" UHD OLED TV, and even that was on a delayed schedule due to the poor economy.

We are always up against the same "chicken or the egg" problem; No 4K media if there is no 4K displays, but 4K displays are hard to sell if there is no 4K media.

With the article being about the worlds first 4k, oled, curved hdtv, it only makes sense that LG would be launching them in such large sizes.

Saying they've got "the worlds first" then following it up with sizing it small just wouldn't make it seem so impressive.

Surely there will be more standard sizes to come.
