I opened a 50 pack of TDK 40x data CD-R last night and there was a strong odor coming off the Ritek disks.

I burned one of the disks, and afterwards listened to it in the DVD player, my computer room is small, and after about an hour I had to pull the disk because of the smell.

Has anybody else experienced this? Not sure what's in these disks, but I felt alittle dizzy before pulling the one out of the DVD.Code on the disks are 97m15s17f

Thanks,
Ron

I only noticed the smell of TY media once I opened them, Ritek to a lesser extent, and CMC + Kodak have no smell for me.

After I finish burning, I haven't noticed anything, but I have a big room with good cooling in my server case.

I have my drives separated with one empty drive bay between them to help with the cooling b/c my 24/10/40 burner and 16x DVD drive can get pretty warm from use.

This is a follow-up to my first post.

I contacted TDK, and they stated that the disks will heat up as you are listening to them, and advised me to contact Ritek to see if there was any harm in inhaling the fumes.

I did send Ritek an e-mail explaining everything, but never received a reply back.

I removed the spindle cover on one of the 50 packs in an out of the way place, and the odor is starting to diminish. I will wait a few more day's before burning anymore disks from that spindle to see if that solves the problem.

I took Racemans advice and moved my burner down a bay for better circulation.

I used the burner steady last night burning x-mas cd's for family and freinds, also listened for a couple hours on the dvd with no problems.

I will open the TDK 40x 50 packs from now on and air them out before using. The quality of the audio is excellent.

I think you really should check and possibly improve your case ventilation, if the heat is causing problems like this -- it must be hot in there.

Get a large "server fan" with an automatic thermostatic control. I have one around 5-6" fan like that, very silent and as the case temp rises it picks up based on the temperature. Make sure your case has sufficient holes for the air intake.

The old school is back. All hail the new http://BitBurners.com !

Some discs 'stink' even though you *can't* smell 'em ! :-)

Another very useful post from....

I don't think this problem has to do with ventilation of the drive, because the original poster said that he smelled it prior to burning.

I recently had the same problem with strong odor off of some TDK blanks. I contacted TDK and this was their reply, with the fluff removed:

---
The most likely cause is that the discs were packaged before the lacquer had a chance to dry. These discs are fully functional, and will not cause any damage to recorders or players. It shouldn't have any toxic/long-term effects.
---

I hope this helps!
