Apple iPad & Mac event: What was announced and what's important

article published on 17 October, 2014

Apple released several updates to its product portfolio in yesterday's event. 5K iMac is one sexy looking screen. Why they feel the need to make it so thin, however, and slap a mobile GPU in it I really don't know. I suppose we'll see how it performs.

Apparently, Thunderbolt 2 (or whatever it is we're on) doesn't have the bandwidth for 5k support - so first revision Mac Pro adopters wouldn't be able to attach a potential standalone 5k Apple screen to their PC (without some sort of swappable upgrade from Apple, or something). This suggests to me we won't be seeing a new Mac Pro for 2 years (probably understandably anyway) but also no standalone screens of this type within Apple's ecosystem for 2 years or so (if they ever go that way at all) - which is a shame.

The one thing I find annoying about Apple's Macs (other than the price) is that they only offer good graphics on the highest end models...all the entry level to mid-range models are cruddy Intel graphics.
