Cheers for the guide, it's worked great for Gone in 60 secs, 16:9 widescreen. I'm now working on backing up Shawshank redemption and run into problems twice.

Firstly, the 16:9 guide, i followed to the T for 60Secs and great. I then went to rip the 16:9 side of the disc for S.R. and that's what smartripper said it was (16:9) yet in the DVD2AVI it reported 4:3. I then thought ok I'll follow the 4:3 guide...

my question really centre around virtual dub, does it matter the order you do the filters??? the guide seems to use the same pictures, yet in 4:3 there is nothing about resizing, and in both guides the pictures are misleading about the order. I followed the order in 16:9 which was fine for Gone60. I then used same method but doing deinterlace first (as S.R. interlaced) and twice now, on the first pass it has given up and locked up on 45%.....

Any ideas at all? I really don't see any major differences between the 16:9 and 4:3 guides except the lack of instruction to resize, which i presume is standard to make it fit on 640x480 as said.

I've now ripped S.R. in 4:3 and gonna try going through the 16:9 guide to the letter and see what happens 3rd time.

Thanks for listening and any suggestions!

Jon

Yeah, the 4:3 guide sucks :-)

I've been planning to update it, but been just too busy. The filter order is incorrect and there are tons of errors in the 4:3 guide as well.

Hey cheers for the quick response.

It's good to hear it's not just me missing something. I really appreciated how easy the 16:9 was to follow (thanks!), and that DVD 2 DIVx does take some time (other than encoding!) to get a good understanding of the process...

Could you however give me any info "of top of ya head" as to if anything I'm doing is wrong? I did actually get the movie ripped first time but stupidly added a couple to the bitrate tool recommendation as Gone60 was quite a bit under the 1400mb i specified... probably cos it so dark. With S.R. i annoyingly ended up with two 703Mb files best case!! and i forget the order i did the filters then. duhhh!.

I would expect,
Deinterlaced (if interlaced)
Null Transform (cropping)
Resize 640x360 with that precise bi-linear.

or would deinterlacing work best last? would have thought resizing best last tho, if filters run in order which im sure they do.

Cant understand why the process has locked up twice at same point, and when it did both times I had the previews up and they were blank when it had locked up (i wasn't waiting around watching at the time!) - dunno if that fact helps?!

Still, the whole point of me in this is to backup my DVDs so when I'm away from home my room contents there are replacable CDs not my DVD collection, just hope my PC aint stolen :) So anyway it would be great to have a cool guide (reliable method) so i could get most of my movies done by the end of the summer.

Cheers again, and in advance etc :D

Ah, the order is pretty much the same as it is for 16:9:

-IVTC (if any)
-Delace (if any)
-Resize
-Cropping (cropping is the last one if you don't add subtitles)

But for resizing, don't do 640x360. You need to resize it using "real" resolution of the video as it is not anamorphic. So, let's assume you have PAL video -- 720x576. By using 640 as your width (best one), you get 512 for your height. So, resize to 640x512 (if PAL) and use Precise bilinear method. And crop after that.
