It WAS built on piracy business model. Unlike the other existing file sharing sites it stopped paying the sharers / posters and that was its death knell. For a while they would simply remove the files upon request. This was ok for those with high speed connection but then the sources dried up. Consequently the premium account holders also moved away.
All's well ends well. I don't miss it.
There are many other file host sites to choose from.
If anyone has files stored at RS, grab them and move
them to another host...

Rapidshare allowed users of popular operating systems like linux and unix and others to be available for download in DMZ zones without them this is going to send people back to torrents which are sometimes way worse.

So here's how to spot a good Linux share:
Check the uploader's profile...
if his track record is consistent as water
and his background is as old as a Green Machine,
then you are Good to go! ;-)
