Although most people probably thought it was shuttered years ago anyways, the music sharing service Grooveshark has officially shut down. The record labels will take over control of the Grooveshark name, its patents and copyrights, and the existing database will be completely wiped. Lets hope for the generosity of the music industry that they could release all their old back catalogues free of charge to the public using the services they have acquired. There are millions of old recordings rotting in cellars that no one would pay for but which could be enjoyed. No doubt I will see pigs flying past my window while I am listening to it!

The music industry may well be helping a few artistes become ridiculously rich but at the same time they are preventing a wealth of music from ever being heard.
