First, I'll say that I did search a long time, but did not find any posts regarding my specific situation. (Also the search function needs to be improved, no advanced options)

Anyways, my 1st issue with VirtualDub (most recent version) when combining 2 same format avi files, using the documented append method, it attempts to make it a 9.4 GB file... when the 2 file each are only 700mb. I wouldn't have a problem, but since the drive their on is FAT32, I can't save more than 4gb per file.

2nd Issue, I'm using TMPGEnc v2.521.58.169, and I was trying to encode 1 700mb avi file to mpeg, using the steps in the "Convert AVI, Xvid, DivX to DVD" thread at the top of this forum. When attempting to use VBR for video, it takes 5+ hours to encode the file. While using CBR for video, it takes 1.5 hours... I have it to configured to use only 50% of the disc (2gb)

System specs just in case:
AMD 2000+
RAM: 512mb
HD Space available: 14GB FAT 32

Let me know if I need to provide any more info.

1st issue,
you forgot to put it to direct stream copy, so it uncompressed frames. which is big.

2nd issue
it should only take double the time of cbr at least. maybe there's some process running on the back, try letting it run a few minutes, and see the time if it lowers a bit.

i wouldn't use cbr, things will get blocky, really blocky.

CQ will be slightly faster. even maybe same time with cbr. nut filesize will be unpredictable.

as for the fat32 problem, maybe its time to upgrade ?

shiroh, thank you for the information. I'll try the direct stream copy later on tonight when I get home.

As processes running in the background, the only thing I might be running is norton av 2004, but nothing else.

Till this, I haven't had any problems with Fat32.

Yes, I agree in the world of backing up movies, upgrading to NTFS would be a good idea. Grrr... I was hoping that CBR would be decent... but if VBR is a must
Oh well, I'll try again tonight and post more exact results.

shiroh, thank you. With the direct stream enabled for both video and audio, saved in record time... 2 minutes and only 1.4 GB. Perfect.

As for the Using the Virtual Dub, still running extremely slow. It seems to Analyize the AVI first, then VBR encode it with 2 passes. Currently 2 hour movie takes 6+ hours to encode.

Does this sound right?
