How do I play part of a video?

Is there a way to play only a portion of a video file? I have some video (mpeg or .avi) of old boxing and I'd like to just play the last 2-3 rounds. How can I select and save just these parts? I was told that you can do this with windows media player 9 series which I'm using on winXP. However, I can't figure out how to do this. Can anyone who knows the steps please help? Also, if there's other recommended software that can do this please let me know. Thanks.
