When i try to convert my .avi movie into mpg in the dire hope of later making it a SVCD using nero, it says can not open or unsupported?
What now? please help.

Well first make sure that you have the Proper codecs installed...You should also make sure that the audio in the AVI file is of a Format that is Supported By TMPGEnc...TMPGEnc prefers the audio to Be Uncompressed,...
If you download this:

This Program is a Really crappy VCD Encoder but it comes with a small tool called "Decompress.exe" that you can use to decompress the audio in your AVI file..
Just download the File from the Link and just save the File called "Decompress.exe" and get rid of the rest..Then use the Decompress.exe tool to turn your AVI into an AVIU with uncompressed audio...
Now to get rid of the "Can Not open or Unsupported" error...
Run TMPGEnc and go to "options" to "Enviromental Settings" to "Vfapi Plugins" and Raise the Priority of the "Direct Show File Reader" to "2" , This should get TMPGEnc to load your AVI file ,Just remember to decompress the audio first as it can save you a lot of Problems in the Future...

Minion, thaks for your help so far, right now i have two files, one is called "final destination 1_pcm" the other is called "final destinatio 1_pcm" but it appears to be an mpeg, cos it says on media player "mpg"
Is it ready to burn onto CDR? Im not really sure if im going about this the right way, and i cant really confirm it because the biggest CDR's i have at the minute are 700, the movie is about 900, but, if it were small enough would i now be to make a svcd/vcd out of it?

If you created these Files useing "Tmpgenc" then Yes they are Mpeg files but if you haven"t encoded them yet then they are still AVI files....
You can fit a 800mb Mpeg file on a 700mb CD-R when burning in VCD or SVCD format..Most movies will have to go on 2 CD-R"s because a VCD can only hold about 75-79 Minutes of Video and a SVCD can only hold about 40 minutes of Video so if your Mpeg files are too big you can cut them in Half useing the Simple editor in TMPGEnc....
Just run TMPGEnc and to to "File" to "Mpeg Tools" to "Merge & Cut" and load in your File and Click the "Edit" button and from there you can Figure it out,Just remember if you made a SVCD File then choose the "Super-Video-CD" setting from the Dropdown menu at the Top and if you are Makeing a VCD then choose the "Video-CD" setting...Don"t choose the Mpeg1 or Mpeg2 setting when editing or the Output file will not be Compliant...
After editing just use Nero to burn in VCD or SVCD Mode......

When i try to burn it as VCD on Nero it says "stream coding is invalid for a VCD", i had trouble choppin it too. How do i encode them? thanks for the feedback.

This is what ive done since, decompressed the audio, ran it through TMPGEnc, so that it was a pmc MPG file, i chose VCD on Nero and opened this new MPG video, it said it "stream coding is invalid for a VCD" so i chose the encode option Nero gave me, it was encoding it for about 70 minutes (i think) then it said not enough space on this disc (i was just doing a test, didnt chop the file).
So was everything right up till that point, i.e. if it was a small enough file would it have worked? I was intending to write at 4x also.

If you encoded the File Properly Nero should not have given you that error but if you Know it is a Mpeg file then you can turn off the Standard Compliance and Burn it anyways but whatever you do do not let Nero re-encode the File because the encoder that Nero uses is very low quality so your movies will look terrorable...
Usually when you get the "stream coding is invalid for a VCD" error with a Mpeg file it is because the header in the File is is not VCD Compliant, This happens sometimes when you did not choose the Correct setting from the Dropdown menu when editing with the "Merge & Cut"....It can be fixed by loading the File back into the Merge & Cut" and then chooseing the Correct setting from the Dropdown menu and clicking "Run" ,The new file should have the Proper Header......

hmm it still has me seriously confused, to be honest i havent a clue how to use the TMPGEnc editing tools, if i get it successfully converted to MPEG using TMPGEnc, can i just turn off the Standard Compliance on Nero, burn at 4x under VCD then be able to watch it on my player?
By the way after i compress the audio file and it turns into pcm, TMPGEnc only lets me convert "audio source" and wont open anything under video source, but i did click "ES (video + audio)".
Im using the movie phonebooth this time as it will fit onto disc easily enough for me, u gotta undersand im an utterly green at this.

Just to update minion, i got my own little breakthrough, i downloaded the AVP small trailer, made sure it was mpg, burnt it as VCD on Nero and hey, it worked! So bascically, any movies i have under "MPG" can be done the same way?

You should be able to play any Mpeg1 files as long as they do not have a Strange resolution, and if Nero gives you an error and wants to re-encode the File you can tell it to burn it anyways and in most cases it should play....Most Mpegs that you download will usually be VCD Mpeg1 files so they can just be burned to CD-R.....

Hey thanks a lot, but ive one more problem, when i decompress the sound on phonebooth, and run it through TMPGEnc, i get sound but no picture ...?
I can convert the audio of the avi files ok it seems, but when i go to open something for video, it says "can not open or unsupported"
edit again, divx seemed to fix that problem, got a nice splitter too so i SHOULD be sittin pretty now ...

more problems, TMPGEnc SEEMED to convert both video and audio, and it seems to be mpg, but media player only plays sound?

OK...If you go to "Options" to "Enviromental settings" to "VFAPI Plugins" and raise the priority of the "Direct Show File Reader" then the Video should be there after encodeing to Mpeg....
If there is a Picture in the Preview window while encodeing then there will be Video in the mpeg file but if you can not see a Preview while encodeing then there will not be any Video in the Mpeg file...
Raiseing the Direct show File Reader in the VFAPI Plugins should solve that problem....Cheers

Edit: Well i finally got my mpegs playin on my standalone dvd player, but i ahve one lst question (i hope) they arent great quality, a little jumpy and pixilated, what went wrong there? they were fine before burnt onto disc ...
