First of all -- is it showing in your Device Manager as hooked up to your Pc ?
There is not much to do when installing those drive, other then pluging the back end and putting the jumper in the right slot. -- Careful , Samsung gives you a single IDE cable for this drive -- ! That's about as cheap as you can get.
The software you got is Power DVD -- did you install that ? can you see your drive in that program ?

its not an external drive. it does show up in fact it plays cds and game discs just fine but wont show dvds. the drive shows in both windvd and powerdvd but when i put a dvd in it says no disc in drive N. can i use a virtual drive like neros or alcohol 120% to watch dvds or would i have to burn them onto the cpu first?

Drive N ????
Bottom Right of your PowerDVD Player -- the Source button -- Click that and put a tick corresponding to the drive where your DVD disk has been inserted ! Or better hit Control-C and configure your drive according to the specs in the HELP section of the Player.

Drive N doesn't sound right at all. Unless you have 10 or more Hard Drives and ATAPI devices (CDROMS etc).
Do you have additional Hard Drives/CDROMS/DVDROMS? If you only have one Hard Drive and a Burner it should be set to drive D. Sounds like something is wrong there.
That shouldn't stop it working though. As you say it plays Audio CD's and reads Games, also from CD I assume, then you may well be stuck with a faulty drive.
Deffo try some more troubleshooting first though before assuming it is faulty.
I don't know what I am doing.

Are Drive M and N on the same IDE cable - Master and Slave.
If they are try disconnecting the CDRW and try the DVDR on the cable as a Master - see if it is a conflict on the cable.
If that sorts it slave the CDRW onto the Hard Disk cable. Leave the DVD on it own.
Edited due to crap Keyboard and Dark Room :(
I don't know what I am doing.

Did you build the PC? Or did you buy it pre-built?
I don't know what I am doing.

45gb ultra DMA hd
dvd-rom 12x max speed
cd-rw hp cd writer+
according to the label on the front of the pc
also its like 4 maybe 5-6 years old
perhaps I need to update the drivers?
I did a complete wipe back to factory a week ago but wouldnt that have fixed the problem? the dvd drive used to play dvds just fine but that was a long time ago. was my dads cpu now its mine its had lots of viruses and other issues which is why did the wipe back to factory with the hp discs that came with the pc
once again thank you

OK. If this was playing DVD's fine and then stopped I will stick my neck out and say the drive is faulty.
If it wasn't showing in Device Manager or in My Computer, and wasn't reading CD's etc Then maybe the cable had come loose - or a software issue and on and on and on.....
The fact that it is reading CD's says to me that the cable is fine and that the software is fine ie drivers.
Add to this a DVD that WAS working and now ISN'T - I would have to guess at a faulty unit.
I don't think the age of the system or the fact it has had viruses should stop the DVD from reading DVD's but allows it to read CD's
Unless you are quite confident/compitent with PC's and Windows you may have to take it somewere for someone to have a look at it.
I assume you mean you have one of those "Roll Back" cd's that image the Windows Installation when it was built, and basically returns it to the state it was in when you purchased it? If that didn't sort it then it is almost a certainty that it is a faulty drive - sorry to say it, but it may need replacing. 6 years is a decent haul for a piece of hardware.
I don't know what I am doing.

I think pretty much ALL DVD/RW are cheap these days - even the new DVDRW - Dual Layer Burners have been released at low prices - £60 in the UK for brands like LG/Liteon/NEC/Sony. Pretty amazing considering the prices of standard DVDRW just 6 months ago were over £100!!!
You want my preference - you can't go wrong with Pioneer - 107's are nice and cheap these days.
XBOX is out of my league - never even used one - sorry.
I don't know what I am doing.
