TiVo sues Samsung over patent infringement

article published on 9 September, 2015

Popular DVR maker TiVo has sued Samsung over patent infringement this week, claiming that Samsung's own DVRs violate four specific TiVo patents. The move is unsurprising as TiVo has a long history of suing over its DVR patents. In the past decade the company has racked up $1.6 billion in settlements from companies like Dish, AT&T, Motorola and Cisco. "Today's action should help address ... [ read the full article ]

Good for them. They might be trolling but they did essentially invent the DVR and to this day, it's by FAR the absolute best, most intuitive, most user-friendly as well as fun and convenient DVR out there.

Too bad it's not worth the money to use theirs as every company has their own DVR, rendering TIVO rather useless since you can't use it to actually REPLACE an existing DVR from the cable company. Having a Tivo would mean you wasted hundreds if not a quick 1K on equipment that HOOKS TO YOUR EXISTING CABLE COMPANY-ISSUED DVR.

Only for the rich and wasteful.

Tivo has been long done ! The only way they can make any money is suing other companies ! I wish they would go away ! Their settlements only make you pay more for the DVR you presently use.

Really? Are you sure one cannot replace cable company equipment with a TiVo?

Thanks for that tip...I'll go tell my TiVo Series3 that it hasn't been capable of being DVR/cable box.

I bet it didn't know it wasn't capable of doing what it's done night and day for years. Do I have to "unwatch" all that content, too?

Virgin now licence and use a Cisco Cable box with Tivo OS onboard.
It is anything but perfect - those long pauses and delays and quite a few things that are missing but present on other DVR's - you would think that Youview would have taken all the best bits and incorporated them - but no - none of the boxes I have are perfect - from the Skybox F3 , Virgin Tivo , Sky box or Talktalk Youview box.

Another greedy company that has had its day trying to screw just that little bit more blood out of a stone!

Rather than rant on being the smartass you are...NEWB...present details that counter my statement!

Other than cable cards, which many providers don't offer such as ATT Uverse, YOU CAN NOT USE TIVO SOLELY BY ITSELF. And since many don't deal in cable cards, I rule that out so PIPE DOWN.
