Hi guys

I have 2 avi files ,each one about 700mb.and im trying to join them together...the problem is when i open the folder with the 2 files in ..I click on the first file then open but an error message comes on(it comes and goes that quick that i cant read wat it says).
I know i have the right codecs installed (gspot checked and played ). and also i have set the video and audio to direct stream copy but no use :(

I'm not sure, the problem could be a number of things, but VirtualDub is sometimes pretty touchy with what it will work with. It's shareware, which means they don't have the funds that the other more pricy processors (e.g. Adobe) have at their disposal to aquire licenses and such.

If you're looking to join them, remember that they have to have the same codec, and be closely related (usually it's only a good idea to try and join files that were the same file originally, but were separated to fit on two cd's, etc.).

I'm not sure, but I think VirtualDub may only join files that it has separated itself. At any rate, if VirtualDub is giving you troubles, I'd head to another third-party joiner. Some are better than others, and some aren't nearly perfect, but they sure aren't picky with what they'll process. Try searching for a video joiner; it should be the first or second link. I'm sure you'll find what you're looking for. You may even find one on this site somewhere.

yes, i think you can't join files encoded by different encoder, like xvid will not join with divx video. different frame rate. and so on. at least i know it will not in AVI container. i'll try with mkv.

Hi guys
I still dont understand why VirtualDub wont let me even open a file 1 (when im trying to join 2 files )
Heres what im doing plz feel free to tell me if im doing anything wrong.
joining 2 AVI files.
1) I run VirtualDub and under video select DIRECT STREAM COPY and under audio i do the same select DIRCT STREAM COPY.

2) I open video file ( and select the first of the two videos i want to join ).
After i have done this i get an error message (the error message comes and go's so fast that i dont have time to read what it says.

I know VirtualDub has problems joining 2 files if they are not the same format or bit rate and stuff but the files i have that i want to join are ok they are both divx AVI same bit rate and every thing.
PS.. they were the same file before they were split and i have the right codecs.
so what gives ???

Wait...
So VirtualDub won't even open the first file? At all??
That's not a combining problem; you haven't even moved onto the combining tool in VirtualDub.

There's a problem with the first file...and it must be big, because usually VirtualDub can repair the AVI container pretty easily.

And they're DivX, huh? That's a pickle.

Your problem is that VirtualDub won't even open the file, so I'd say try opening the second file and see what happens. If it does the same thing, then something happened to both those files, possibly before they were split. But if it opens the second file no prob, then the first file is simply corrupt. I'm not sure, though, what you can do to fix a corrupt file that VirtualDub won't touch... I'd say try another program like AviSynth and try to process the file that way.
