I have used DVD Ripper and Smart Ripper which has put the said disc on my hd but it takes up 6gb of space whereas a full film is only 699mb prox
I looked through the tuts but couldnt see how to do this. Any help with this would be much appreciated

I'm trying to figure out what you are asking. I sure wish people like you would read over their posts before clicking the post button. It's usually a good idea to form complete sentences when asking for help. It's much easier to help someone when they're making sense. Well, I guess you're one of the better ones.

I'm not sure what you're saying here. I would love to help you, but I'm just not sure what you're saying... If you download a video from a peer, yes, it is common to find it in 700mb format, but the original owner of the file went through great lengths to make it that size.

Normally, a ripped DVD will usually be 3-7GB. This is why we compress the video to a more suitable size. You can use DivX, or perhaps Xvid to do this (though I prefer DivX myself). Mostly, videos are made in 700mb format to share online or if you don't care much for quality. Those of us that are a bit pickier tend to use just about twice that bitrate.

Just please specify what you were referring to above, and I'd be glad to step you through compressing your video, depending on your preferences. I didn't mean to sound rude before, I simply have read alot of forum posts and get annoyed at some of the crap I've ran into. It gets to the point where you can't even figure out what the person is asking.

I am sorry to stress you, I understand that my question had all the hallmarks of a retarded Gibbon but I didnt know how else to explain it tactfully without incurring the wrath of the room as far as legal technicalities are concerned.
So here it is and hoping not to be kicked for it.
I have a dvd that I want to share the contents with in my winmx folder. When I put the dvd onto my hd it took up 6gb of room. Obviously I can't put many onto my computer without it soon being filled up. What I was asking was basically what should I do to put all my disks onto my harddrive? What format do I use? Just point me in the direction of the right tutorial and I will be happy to slog away at trying to grasp it without bothering anyone again.

Well, I hate to break it to you, but sharing videos peer-to-peer is highly illegal and is not supported by this or any other forum. These forums and guides are for the backing-up and changing of format of movies which have been bought legally by the persons involved. Since they are simply changing the format of a video for their own purposes (be it to play on their computer or to play on their DivX certified device), it is quite legal for them to do what they wish.

You won't find much help in the field you are looking to go.

If you wish to back up your DVD's or would like to have them in a filesize small enough to keep your collection on your computer for easy access, then you can be helped. Several guides will work, some of the more notable being:

http://www.everwicked.com/content/DivX_5_Guide/

http://www.afterdawn.com/guides/archive/dvd2divx_anamorphic.cfm

http://www.doom9.org then Guides>>>DivX/Xvid>>DivX5

I hope that helps. And try to keep in mind: sharing videos doesn't help anybody. Anybody can go to Blockbuster and rent a DVD for $3.59, and not be breaking numerous copyright laws. What do you really get out of sharing a video? Satisfaction that you have single-handedly undermined the work that went into producing a film that cost millions to make, just to save some poor sod $3.59 by allowing him to download it from you? Unless it's a steamy pile of dog shit like Love Actually or Battlefield: Earth, I see no reason why any movie deserves that. Because the people that made those movies deserve a slow, painful death. Not quite as much Battlefield: Earth, because they weren't trying to suck. But Love Actually blew. Hard. They knew it too. I mean somebody had to look at the screenplay sometime during the production and realize that they were going to do permanent damage to anybody unfortunate enough to accidentally see this train-wreck of a film. Jesus.

What's the best program for backing up my dvd's to dvd-r. When other people watch my dvd's they are not careful and often scratch my discs or leave finger prints. I tried using Nero 6 but my dvd was copyrighted so it wouldn't let me do it. How do I get around this.

Well, that depends. If you would like your DVD to play in regular standalone players, you are in the wrong forum and should check this one out:
http://forums.afterdawn.com/forum_view.cfm/44

There is another way, though, which has its own advantages and disadvantages...

Advantages:
2-3 movies per DVD, minimal quality loss (negligible quality loss if done right)

Disadvantages: WILL NOT play in regualr standalone DVD players, unless they are DivX-Certified. Will play on your PC.

If that is what you are looking for, follow the links I posted ^^right^^^up^^^there^^. If you have any questions along the line, don't hesitate to ask in this thread.
