Problem on Home DVD player

Hi newbie here
I am not sure if this is the right location to post this or not but I hope some of you may be able to help me with this one...

I have a Sony DAV-550 dvd player.
I have moved recently and prior to the move did not press the mecha lock button. When I installed the DVD in the new location all seemed fine.
After an hour or so the DVD i was watching just froze on the screen. I then ejected the DVD and tried another one, The following sequence happens:

The display panel says "reading" and then goes blank
It tries to read the disk in total 3 times.
At the end of this reading sequence it says "Can't play" I have tried audio CD's and they are fine.
I have left it swicthed off for a couple of days and tried again but the same thing happens...any suggestions MUCH APPRECIATED!!!!!!!!!!!
