HELP! ATAPI command timeout error after upgrading Nero

I just upgraded my Nero and when burning (or trying to) I know receive SCSI/ATAPI command timeout errors.
Am running Win98SE, TDK 16x/10x/40xa VeloCD (EIDE) on Celeron 466. CD is on my secondary EIDE as primary(No slave). Everything else on the CDRW works (plays etc). Nothing on system was changed from last successful burn.
I've done the following, and nothing has worked: (reboot and tried to burn after each)
*disabled autoinsert
*disabled disconnect
*disabled DMA
*checked for firmware update (there is none)
*uninstalled Nero and removed nerocd95.vxd from HD, reinstalled original version from CD
*rebuilt ASPI layer to 4.60 (1021) and aspichk says "one host adapter has been detected".
*tried reducing the buffer size in Nero
*removed packet writing software InCD

I have no clue what to do now.
Should I upgrade to Adaptec v4.7 drivers? I thought I'd read that folks had problems.

Wrote Ahead software twice and have received no answer from them 8 days later.

Am guessing that Nero (during upgrade) wrote over something that I don't know about... drivers, controllers???
