For as long as I've been here, there have been occasional posts asking if there is a new type of copy protection. Like everyone else who "knows what they're talking about" I've always answered that no there isn't because a player couldn't read it if there was. I've recently seen a couple of posts on Doom9 that lead me to believe this isn't necessarily the case:
http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=8936433dd62a0b3f4494328f17dcdbf8&threadid=79689 http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=80118
If the information in these threads is accurate (and I have no reason to believe it wouldn't be) it would mean that it is possible to have a perfectly good DVD that can be played by any player (standalone or software) and still give errors ripping because the player is never told to read the bad (non-existent) data. If you get a DVD that seems to have this problem I'd advise making sure that DVD Decrypter is set to ignore errors and this may solve the problem. It might also explain why some people have no problems with DVDs that others report the errors with.
I have to stress that I don't have any first hand knowledge of what's apparently going on with these discs, but it's something we should be exploring since it's the sort of thing that's likely to become common if it stops even a few people from copying their DVDs. If you run into a title like this, please post here so we can try to determine if this is indeed what's happening and figure out what the best solution is.

What did you rip it with? If it was Decrypter, do you have Ignore Read Errors checked on the I/O tab in the settings window?

I have been experiencing these exact same errors on numerous DVDs. I used DVD2OneX, MacRipper and Fast DVD Copy 2. All of them report an error at a certain block. The DVDs have been spotless, no scratches.

@sly_61019: That's very interesting. I wonder if it's something specific to certain drives or if it's something else entirely. Given the number of DVDs that seem to have multiple versions available I suppose you could also have a different version of the disc. I suppose all we can do now is keep gathering data and see if any conclusions present themselves. Just for the record, what drive did you rip it with?
@jstonemo: I wish I knew more about Mac ripping tools because it sounds like you could be very helpful in figuring this out. Can you give some examples of discs that have exhibited this problem? Make sure to include the DVD's region. Maybe we can get a decent list of discs to at least start checking.

I will start keeping a list. The latest one is Sex and The City Season 1, disc 1. Region free.
Don't laugh, it's for my wife.
I am using a Pioneer DVR-103. I know it is an antique now, but I am broke.

yeah, mine is probably a different region (1). i used a pioneer 105 and nec 1100. sometimes the nec wont read a disc, but the pioneer will. So, quality of the reader could have a lot to do with it.

@jstonemo: I won't laugh. I had to copy that for my wife over a year ago so I understand ;) I didn't have any problems with it (R1) and I ripped it with a Pioneer 104.
@sly_61019: I suspect the drive is probably part of the issue. I don't understand it, but from what little evidence we've seen so far it seems likely.
Maybe the best way to do this is if you have a disc that won't copy with either Shrink or Decrypter you should make sure to try it with Ignore Read Errors checked. Then post the movie, the region, and what drive you were ripping with. Then if someone else sees your post and has successfully ripped it we'll have a good picture of what worked and what didn't.
Interestingly I recently had a DVD that I couldn't rip in ISO mode with Decrypter, but after 4 tries I switched to File mode and everything ripped with no errors.
