Hey everyone,
i'm new here, just registered. couple months back, i had to put in a new hard drive into my pc... i also bought a firewall (RIAA scare) and got the adfree version of grokster (for $30, was it??)
i was using grokster along with my firewall a week ago and everything was going fine. however, since this morning, grokster's turning ugly. when my pc is running with the firewall, the CPU usage is only upto 3% tops. now when i start grokster, it starts off fine, then after a minute, if i click on the 'search' tab, my cpu usage goes upto a whopping 100% and everything freezes and is sooooo slow, it literally takes min's to unfreeze (i don't even wait that long and restart the pc). i've ran adaware, currently running Virusscan as well.
anyone know what the prob could be? something wrong with grokster itself?!
lastly, i'm reconsidering using grokster (even if it works out..) what are some good bittorent sites? how is it different than grokster/napster etc.?
i'm hoping someone here can help me. thanks in advance!

Firstly I reckon u wasted £30 lol.

For your problem you could try a defrag. If nothing else atleast its defragged :-)

Also you could try other spyware tools like spybot Search and Destroy or another good spyware tool I think would be BPS (just do a search) It solved a major problem that spybot nor adaware found, thanks to my mate Loner :)

Failing the above..you could also look at any program you installed AFTER you installed grokster and try uninstalling it to see if it improves your system running) I had a similar problem the other week with and after doing all the usual spyware checks etc I found later that my problem was caused by a small badly written program that I'd installed..soon as I unistalled it and restarted everything worked ok.

Also you could checkout Registry Mechanic v3..excellent little tool. It will repair any damage to the registry caused by bad installaions or something.

you could also dump grokster and go for kazaa-lite, kazaa-lite resurrection or similar which are just the same as grokster and are totally FREE!! :)

thats all I can think of for now but I'm sure someone else might have some things for you to try.

lemme know how you get on

Mart :)

ok. i'm gonna run defrag before bed, but this is what i noticed. when i don't have grokster running and i look up what processes are running, mcshield.exe is NOT running. when i open up grokster, after a few seconds, mcshield.exe is using upto 97% of my stinking cpu!
what's going on here?? is mcshield part of virusscan enterprise McAfee)?
here's the thing though, when i got back my pc, at start up, it would startup with Virusscan enterprise and my firewall, and grokster used to run just fine. now, i even disable the firewall, and run grokster and then i observe that mcshield.exe is using quite a lot of my cpu. however, it's not starting up at start up.
can someone PLEASE,PLEASE help me out and explain to me what i can do? i run win2k. i shall be greatful forever...
thanks in advance.

hard drive doesn't need defrag done..... analyzed it and 95% is free and said i don't need to run it.
i think the problem is mcshield.exe what can i do about that?

All I can suggest is that you uninstall Grokster...I did a search earlier for a similar problem as yours and there were quite a few...one guy was using kazaa media desktop and had the same problem and it was ok once he unistalled kazaa (if I remember right) but uninstall it and see what happens..if everything works better after, then look for kazaa-lite or kazaa-lite resurrection. Also..Look for those programs I mentioned cos u also might have picked up some nasty stuff with grokster. Dont just rely on one spyware tool..I use quite a few.

Theres not much more I can think of to do...all I can say is you have to unistall grokster if only to see if that was the cause of the problem...or, as u said..grokster was fine initally so if you have installed a program since grokster try unistalling that..it may take a while to find your problem but its hard to pinpoint it until you try things. I'm no expert at this and I only go talk from my own personal experiance of problems. So do what I suggested or if anyone has any better suggestions then try those.

Let me know how it goes and I'll do some more searching around for you if your still having problems.

Mart :-)

thanks for the help MartMart. after doing numerous searches for disabling mcshield.exe, i disabled 'on-access scan', which as seemed to solve the problem for me. if left enabled, i think it starts virus checking on whatever folder/file you open up (i think). thanks!

on access scan = is what keeps your computer virus free - its the virus scanner that works in the background to scan for viruses trying to get a place on your comp man --- if u disable that, whats the point in having the software

i think the problem is your current installation

uninstall Grokster - Uninstall Mcafee

then scan with BPS Spyware Adware Remover as MartMart suggested then do a registry scan with Registry Mechanic v3

then reboot - reinstall Grokster, then reinstall Mcafee then reboot again.. and the problem SHOULD be solved :D

just curious - but what firewall are you using?
