I need some help here...

Whenever I try to convert a source file to VCD/MPEG format, it always tries to re-size it to 4:3 ratio and makes the picture look stretched verically. How can I convert a file using TMPGEnc and maintain the original files proper aspect ratio?

if your source is 16:9, in source aspect ratio set it to '16:9 display', if 4:3 same goes set it to '4:3 display' in source aspect ratio. then in video arrange method set it to 'full screen (keep aspect ratio)'. its as easy as all that.

The source I'm re-coding is 640x272 (23.97 fps)...which doesn't really fir PAL or NTSC widescreen. Is there anyway to use a custom aspect ratio?

ive never had to use custom aspect ratios and ive encoded vcds from dvd sources (720 x 576/720 x 480 to 352 x 240/352 x 288), and even odd divx/xvid resolutions, and i cant say ive ever had a problem with stretched or thinned picture.

follow these steps and your vcd should turn out looking perfect.

open tmpgenc wizard(easiest)>>select ntscfilm vcd(23.97fps=ntscfilm)>>load up your source file and for 'aspect ratio' set it to '16:9 display'(640x272=16:9)>>>next go into 'other settings', in the video tab select 'motion search precision' and set to high quality(not highest, double the time and no dif in quality)>>>then click on the advanced tab and set the 'video arrange method' to 'full screen (keep aspect ratio)'.

and thats pretty much all there is to it. you can make a custom aspect ratio by select 'center (custom size)' in video arrange method and then setting it to however many pixels as you want, but it takes alot of f%$king around/trail&error to get the wanted end result, the method i prescribed should work a treat so you wont have to even bother ;).
