It depends on the format of the MPG files. They're probably either VCD or SVCD. VCDs can be made DVD compliant by simply demuxing the audio and converting it to 48kHz. SVCDs are a little more complicated, although with DVD-Lab you can make a non-standard DVD which may play fine on your DVD player or may give you borders and therefore need to be re-encoded. In either case SVCD audio also needs to be converted to 48kHz for DVD compliance.
