Focus Servo Error?? Anyone ever get it?

I have been getting the mentioned error message quite a bit now. I am not sure if it a software or hardware issue. It seems that I have been getting consistant error reads on all of my burns lately. I am using DVD Decryptor/DVD Shrink and Nero 6. I can get started then my computer seems to lose the DVD player and it goes idle or I get an error. Any suggestions/ideas on what the problem is or how to fix it?

Tracking servo failure and/or Focus servo failure are usually caused :-

1) Other Devices clashing with the Recording device.

Make sure ~~All hard drives are placed on the Primary IDE, check that the drives are correctly set as master/slave. CD-ROM/CD-R/RW or DVD drives are placed on the Secondary IDE, set the recording drive as the "master". If you are using a USB or IEEE devices, disconnect them.

2) If you are using windows XP -- Update your chipset IDE controller -- thats the 3rd item in Device Manager in the [IDE ATA/ATAPI (hard disk) controllers] section.


3)Recording errors often occur when the disc is dirty, or has fingerprints or scratches. If an error occurred during test simulation (before actual recording), clean the disc. If you are getting recording errors, try the following.
-Use a different blank, recordable disc.
-Use a different manufacturer's disc.
-Ensure the disc is clean before recording.

Thanks for that info, it does help clear up some frustration! I have a laptop that I am using at the moment and it is XP. How exactly do I check to make sure I am t at the settings you told me about. I am going to go and experiment right now and see what happens. It's funny because it was working great a few days a go and then this just started happening last night and I have had these errors since then.

Also, on this same subject, I get a "head select fault" message as well. Is this anything to do with my ASPI settings? My default it keeps going to is MS SPTI for reading the DVD drive.

That is a Sense Data Error code for Bytes 12 and 13
on your SCSI. (S)mall (C)omputer (S)ystems (I)nterface

Have a look in Nero Tools -- check if it reports ASPI being properly installed --

Did you install new software ?

Maybe worth a try to uninstall Nero and re-install it.

I am going to try reinstalling Nero, but the same head select fault comes up with DVD decryptor as well. What i have done is taken all the new updates for XP Media Center and XP. Also, uncompressed my C: drive, going to defrag as well. These errors occur then at times i can burn then at times I can't. getting confusing but I appreciate the help because otherwise I would have gone nuts by now.
