Samsung's new stamp sized SSD could be heading to next MacBook

article published on 3 June, 2016

Samsung has introduced a new super small SSD that might only cover your regular postage stamp but can fit 512 gigabytes of data. This PM971-NVMe chip is sized at one hundredth of a normal 2.5 inch SSD you usually see on laptops. Laptops are becoming smaller by the year and storage this is one of the key things holding them back. Replacing a standard 2.5 inch drive with a miniscule chip ... [ read the full article ]

Not really impressive considering the capacity and speed of a class 10 microsdhc card.

Granted that sdhc cards don't have an independent controller to handle complex storage routines but never-the-less..........not that impressed.

It isn't about impressing you...or anyone for that matter. Soldering a chip to the mainboard would be great by apple marketing standards.

Look at the iPhone...the difference between the 16GB iPhone 6S and the 128GB iPhone 6S is $200. The cost of a SanDisk class 10 128GB microSD card is under $42...no one would pay $200 for less than $42 in storage if they had an option, that's why the iPhone has no microSD slot. Now Apple sees a way to eliminate aftermarket SSD installs in the MacBook and of course they are interested.

A 600GB microSD runs about $200 from a good brand. By Apple logic, that should mean a difference of $800 between the 16GB and 512GB MacBooks, and you know people will pay it because while apple products don't always "Just Work", they do always "Just Sell".
