I've been trying to make a backup of spirited away with decrypt, it had css but does star to back it up, it eaches 40% and stops, I realise that the dvd is likely to be damaged but jsut wondered if there was anything I could try to get around the problem

There are a couple of things that might help. If you're ripping in ISO mode you might want to rip in File mode instead. I had 1 DVD (don't remember which one) that would error out while ripping in ISO mode, but when I switched to File mode it ripped fine. The other possibility is to set DVD Decrypter to ignore read errors. You can do this by going to the Tools menu and selecting Settings. Then go to the I/O tab, and on the lower right check the box next to Ignore Read Errors. that way it will skip over bad spots. It may or may not give you good results.

There has also been some discussion recently about whether there's a new copy protection that uses references to non-existent cells (the video units that VOB files are broken into) that don't cause problems playing because they're never referenced in any actual titles, but may cause problems for ripping the DVD. It's unclear exactly what solutions are possible for this problem, with the exception of ripping in IFO mode which I'm not particularly familiar with so I won't try to give directions for that. This may or may not be related to your problem, and I'd recommend trying the Ignore Read Errors option before even worrying about anything else.
