Doom3 has Spyware/Trojan code?

Anyone got any information on Doom3 having major spyware/trojan code in it? My friend was telling me that there was something on the TV news last night (New Zealand), that 80 people in the UK had been caught for having pirated Doom3 copies.

The game is supposed to connect to ID software every 20secs or something and report back on if it's a pirate copy or not.

Can't find anything on the net as yet, but this is some seriously dodgy stuff.

I guess a firewall would stop it from doing anything though. This type of tactic is worse than Microsoft Product Activation.
