What resolution do you suggest for encoding widescreen DVDRips and fullscreen DVDRips into xvid and divx?

It depends, I guess as long as the aspect ratio
is good, it's not critical. I did some tests
recently and used 640 * x, where x is the amount
required to correct the A/R.

unless you want to make it anamorphic.

yes you can do anamorphic encoding on mpeg4, but not on AVI, it will put the AR tag, but players will ignore it. mkv will do it.

i learned it at doom9 forum, but i can't get in right now.

but for now 1:1 is good for starters

Yea, I've been using 640x360 for a 16:9 movies and 640x480 for 4:3 movies, which seems to be fine.

@shiroh: anamorphic - does that mean 1:1 yea? So 640x640 yea? Never tried that, but I could imagine that looking kinda weird.

I looked on the back of a DVD the other day and I saw that it said: "Presented in a "letterboxed" widescreen format preserving the 2.35:1 aspect ratio of its original theatrical exhibition." But then I played that DVD in Windows Media and went to the properties and the resoultion was 835x480, which doesn't follow the 2.35:1 at all. So what the heck is that all about? That's 16:9, but not 2.35:1?!

ananmorphic encoding is usually does by only cropping the borders, if any. then without resizing, you encode it with the correct/original pixel ratio. and then some other process.

nero digitalput the AR flag right in the bitstream, so there is no need to put the container with one. but of course, Nero is not free.

the letterbox, i think it meeans that it got this black bars encoded on the video.
i would say resize with both aspect and see which is correct, then crop. :P
