I need help with my HP 420i DVD Writer. Every time I try to burn to DVD media (=r, -r, rw, etc.) it locks up in the middle of the burning the DVD. Whether I am trying to make DVD data or video files. It also does not matter what software I use. It dose it with Roxio, NTI 6 Platinum, PowerPoducer, etc. Can someone please help with this issue. I am wasting media.

Hi,

There are several things that may be causing your troubles but I need to ask a few questions first.

Do you have any packet writing apps installed such as InCD, DLA or Drag to Disc? These types of apps can be very problematic because their habit of trying to keep constant access to the drive will interrupt other burning software that needs exclusive access to the drive in order to burn successfully.

Is DMA enabled for your drive? If your drive is in PIO mode the slow transfer speeds may be causing problems. Here's a link to help with that:

Is Roxio absolutely necessary? Roxio has a nasty habit of secrewing up other burning apps so unless you really need it I'd recommend uninstalling it. Here's a little utility for getting rid of any traces left after the normal uninstall:

Do you have the latest firmware for your drive? newer firmwares will improve media compatibiblity as well as overall performance. Try HP's website for the latest version for your exact model drive and make sure to follow the instructions.

Are you multitasking while you burn? Burning DVDs takes quite a bit of your system resources so it's best to leave it be until the burn is done.

It may also help to disable Windows built in IMAPI burning service. It's a pretty useless feature especially when you already have dedicated burning apps. Here's the skinny:

Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services.

Once the Services window is open, scroll down to "IMAPI CD Burning COM Service" and double click it. In the new properties window find "Startup Type", select "Disabled" then click PK. This should disable it and you can re-enable at any time if you wish.

Let us know how you do :)
