Convert ntsc dvd to pal or use tv converter?

I am totally new to this, so please forgive me if I say something that makes no sense.

I have a pal tv, a multiregion dvd player, and when I play region 1 (ntsc) dvds, they play in black and white. Could anyone advise on the best action to take regarding this- the two options that I have come up with are 1) to buy a ntsc-pal converter for my tv (analogue), or 2) Rip the dvd and copy with signals converted ntsc to pal during the process(if this is possible).

Can anyone offer any advice? I can buy an analogue tv converter but I've read contrasting things about them- some say they don't produce colour, some say they do, so I've been racking my brains for other ideas...except of course to buy a new tv!
