How much are you willing to pay for a screen repair? Apple reveals iPhone X pricing

article published on 30 October, 2017

Many modern smartphones aren't easily repairable, and even if you are handy with electronics you might be in for a pickle replacing a broken screen. Getting them repaired professionally, though, might equal highway robbery. This is especially true if you've just pre-ordered the new iPhone X, as we've found out due to Apple releasing their pricing for iPhone X repairs. As MacRumors first ... [ read the full article ]

LoL. Seriously? For the cost of a screen repair you could buy two decent smart phones with money left over. For the cost of any other repair you could by 4-5 of them. For the cost of an iPhoneX, applecare+, and two screen repairs ($1260 total) you could buy AT LEAST 11 Android phones.

...or to look at it another way, while the iPhoneX will lose it's "new model" value after 6 months and will be made slow by updates within two years, you could use the same money to buy a new phone every 18 months for the next 16 years...and that's assuming you just put all the money in an account with no interest. If you invested and got just 7% return on your money, that $1260 could buy you a new phone every 18 months FOREVER, even ignoring the fact that prices keep dropping.

I realize that Samsung also charges way too much for phones (less than this but still too much), so this isn't an Apple problem. I can't blame apple for selling a $250 phone for $1000...if I I could do that, I would. It is a customer problem. If people didn't buy devices like this then companies wouldn't keep making them...or at least they wouldn't keep putting 400% markups on them.

The good news is that there were no lines for the last iPhone launch. At the very least people don't seem to think that getting a new iPhone is worth both the insane price AND a night (or more) on the sidewalk...that's a step in the right direction. If that continues maybe people will start demanding that a $1000 phone will have more practical real-world functionality than a $250 phone.
