Lars Ulrich: Metallica vs. Napster "maybe not the smartest PR move of all time"

article published on 10 November, 2017

We at AfterDawn followed the early days of digital music very closely, and that meant obviously reporting on the historical Metallica vs. Napster case not only inside the courthouse but perhaps especially outside. At the turn of the millennium Napster, a music sharing service that allowed users to share music in MP3 format with others over peer-to-peer (P2P) technology, was booming. Yeah, a band that thrives on the whole rebel vibe going more corporate than EMI was really dumb. I wonder if anyone ever calculated how much this improved Megadeth sales.

Understatement of the year "not the smartest PR move".

I am 44. I was highly ensconced in the Napster technology. Metallica single-handedly took them down casting a negative light on file sharing and drilling into Napster and Sean Parker causing him to have to sell Napster to Rhapsody which was a bottom-feeding service and program at that time. Real Networks was a joke......but a stepping stone I guess.

Of course, we all knew damn well that Lars is a jagoff and the efforts by Metallica caused them to lose a LOT of fans...that and adding a f*cking symphony to their 'at-the-time' crap music to make it even crappier.

Lars' holier-than-thou attitude sucked and sadly they didn't put 2 and 2 together to realize early on that their money is primarily from concerts. 35 bucks for a T-shirt is outrageous......but that's where they get paid. Not the averge .07 cents an album sold.

Metallica's music has definitely improved, not to the likes of MoP or RtL or JFA, or even the Black album but, it's way better than the days of their being consumed by the attack on Napster.
