High I'm new on this community..i'm reading much of the forums here that might help with my problem but its seems i'm out of luck thus i have a different scenario though, i think.

i got a pc 23" acer monitor that has vga and a dvi-d dual link input with hdcp capability. i got a xbox360 that works perfectly by connecting from my xbox hdmi to my pc dvi input, im using a hdmi cable and a dvi adapter in my case. now heres my problem:

i got a set top box which has a rca and a s-video output, since i know that a straight forward connection by using a simple cable from my set top box to my pc monitor wont work...so what i did is i bought a converter from ebay that could convert a signal from rca/ s-video to hdmi only so when i try to connect my set up box rca output to my video converter rca input and from my converter hdmi output to my pc monitor dvi input using the same cable as what i mentioned above and then i dont get a video diplayed on my pc monitor. i checked all of the connection the power of all sources, everything is just in place and powered on. i tried using the s-video connection as well still no picture.

my converter is not broken thus when i try my set top box(rca/ s-video-output)--->{(rca-input)converter(hdmi-output)}---->(input-hdmi)HDTV and it works, so this confuses me.

set top box--->converter(HDMI)--->(HDMI) HDTV === WORKS!!

set top box--->converter(HDMI)--->(DVI)PC monitor === Doesnt WORK!!

is someone there who knows what's wrong?
please i need your suggestions and bright ideas to help me out.

Thanks in advance.

Did you buy an adapter or a converter?

An adapter is simply one type of connection to another type. A converter is a powered box that actively converts analog signal to digital or vice versa, and costs at least $50.

Generally speaking, unless your TV can handle it and convert it, analog (RCA/S-video/VGA) cannot be "adapted" to a digital connection (HDMI/DVI) and you will get no results. You can only do a analog-->analog or digital-->digital connection.

My guess is that your TV has a feature to accept your analog signal over the digital port and your monitor does not.

Hello qwert99, thanks for the reply.

Basically i have both the adapter and the converter.

my adapter is a hdmi to dvi plug, which i used for my xbox, from my xbox hdmi out to my pc monitor dvi-d input that's work just fine.

my converter is a powered box as you mentioned, its actually converts signals from analog (RCA/S-video) to digital (HDMI).

as i mentioned on my previous email, my pc monitor works perfectly when my xbox360 plugs in to it from this connection below:
xbox360 (HDMI output) to PC monitor (DVI-D input),this where my my adapter kicks in as mentioned above, i got a picture with a 1080p resolution on this connection.

now this is my problem and confuses me. since my pc monitor work perfectly with my xbox360, how on earth i dont get any picture on my pc monitor using my converter, since the output coming out from my converter is a converted signal from analog (RCA/S-video) to digital HDMI, i'm using the same cable and adapter which i used for my xbox360. below is my connetion:

set top box(rca/s-video) output===> {input (rca/s-video)CONVERTER (HDMI) output} ====> input (DVI-D) PC monitor.

Please help...

Thanks.

Ok, thanks for the clarification.

You have established that the converter box works since it does work when you use it to go from RCA to HDMI on your TV.

Since you are using the same setup and just switching the output from your TV to your monitor, it seems to me like the problem would be something like the monitor not liking the signal for some reason. I'm wondering if your HDTV has components which allow it to accept a wider variety of digital signal. Perhaps the converter does not produce a "perfect" signal. That is, maybe the signal it produces is not 100% up to standard. The TV may be able to make up for that and the monitor may not.

The only other thing different about the situation is the DVI-->HDMI adapter. It's possible that the adapter is at fault.

Like I said, that is all a guess based on what I am understanding of the situation, and I'm not an expert.

yeah you got a point there, that's the same thing i'm thinking that may cause the problem, most probably the output signal that comes out from my converter is not a 100% converted digital signal. is there any turn around solution for this?

and what do you mean by " the adapter is at fault" do you mean that the adapter i had is a faulty one? sorry if i get you wrong but as i mentioned the adapter works fine when i plugged my xbox360 to my pc monitor using the adapter.

my pc monitor only got a vga and a dvi-d dual link input. anyways..i'm thinking to try on a straight forward connection from my set top box rca or s-video to my pc monitor vga input, is this gonna work? since both are analog to analog?

Thanks.
