Using HDMI Cable with laptop and TV

I recently bought an HDMI cable so I could watch movies that are on my comp or hard drive on our tv (Sharp Aquos), but I am not sure I know how to connect and configure them for it to work. I have a hp pavilion dv4. Could anyone please provide me with the steps I gotta take to get this to work? Is there anything special I have to do as far as changing settings and whatnot?
