Are there no-fee DVR's besides Moxi?

I'm ready to toss my VCR. I want something similar which records HD to a hard drive, ie: a DVR/PVR. Time Warner is our cable provider. I'd rather buy than rent a DVR. My question is, are there any DVR's which work without having to pay their monthly subscription fee? Moxi is like $500...anything cheaper? Can't I just snag a used TIVO off eBay and manually program record times/channels?
