Now that my VCR's are dying I'm forced to switch to DVR. Even after some research I'm not completely clear whether a DVR will function (record/playback shows) without subscribing to a "service" with a monthly fee.

1. Most info I've found refers to HD tv - I don't need HD quality just ability to record ("program" as in a vcr) shows at certain times.

2. Also unclear about the "guide" part. Is there a way for it to regularly get the channel/show information without a fee service?

3. Anyone know of a DVR model that rewinds/fast forwards in small increments? (I've read some only do it in 15 minute and/or 1 hour intervals). I also need one with a Dual tuner as I frequently record 2 shows at the same time.

* The "Lifetime" TiVo deal might work though I don't know how their DVR's function relative to my needs.
** I don't have a PC or know-how to try the Freevo method.
