I've seen countless posts and threads about this and gone through as many as I could but I can't find a resolution.

My EX5000 works perfectly up until I stick a HDD into it but as soon as I try turn it on with the HDD installed, I just get the red standby light and the dashes (- - - -) while the HDD spins up but the box doesn't actually turn on.

The HDD is definitely not faulty as it works in a laptop.
Tried it with NTFS and then just recently tried it without any partition.
It's definitely connected securely and tightly.
There are no broken pins on it.
It's an old IBM Travelstar, 4200, 12GB IDE.

I'm aware that 12GB is not really ideal but thought I'd give it a shot nonetheless.

I know the EX5000 is pretty particular when it comes to compatibility, but I thought that was a physical issue (tried a Fujitsu that physically wouldn't fit).

Does the EX5000 have specific sizes that it's compatible with that would explain this?
