DVD recorder won't become ready to record

I have an LG DVD-RW that will read my DVD's fine but when it is time to record, it says that device is not ready. I am using the current AnyDVD and CloneDVD. I don't know what the problem is. Does anyone think that it has just played out? I have had it a few years. Thanks in advance.
