Just got a new Asus netbook. I wanted to get some recommendations on the best format and software for copying movies over to watch on my netbook. I new to this so please be detailed.

Sorry about that. I don't have have a DVD drive on my netbook I'm looking to rip movies on my desktop to a file on my external hard drive and then transfer to netbook. I'm just not sure what format of file I need or program to watch movies on the netbook. If I need to provide other info please let me know.

For space saving, you may want to look into ripping then converting to .avi.

Hi egsca,
I watch a lot of movies on my advent 4213 netbook.
What I normally do is rip the dvd onto the desktop and then convert over to either the divx or xvid files (.avi). This lets you keep down the hard disk space needed on the net book. I use vlc video player for playback which works well on my netbook.
Take a look at the forums for a dvd ripper and converter that suits you. There are quite a lot. Currently I use DVDFab, DVD Decrypter or DVD shrink. Plus any video converter.
