Copying a dvd using dvd r dl trouble!

im having trouble copying a backup of my sopranos dvd to dvd r dl. i tried 10 discs and all failed! I tried dvd decrypter and ripit4me to create an iso file and when i tried to burn it with imgburn it wouldnt let me. It kept saying to choose the mdf file. Also i tried dvdclone2 and dvd shrink and both failed at about 50%. IM thinking its because i need to insert a layer break in the dvdr dl but i dont know how to do that. This is the first time im trying to burn with a dual layer please help!!!!
