DVD Ripping for PS3 and Ipod

I am looking to Rip my DVD to digital copies for my home through my PS3 and also for on the fly for my Ipod. MY question is what is the best format to rip DVD's to (AVI, MP4 etc.) and is there any way it can work for both the ipod and ps3 while still having good quality.

On a side note I've searched all over for a dvd ripping program and have found many problems with all.
Some that are free don't work very well, the ones that seem to work want you to 50$ etc.
Should I but software from somewhere of is there a free version that is just as good.
