Hi, I recently had to do a reinstall of Windows XP and ever since my DVD RW drive has been producing errors when attempting to back up DVDs.

In DVD Shrink and Syncback it says unable to backup files because of a copy protection error or a I/O device error. I have done all the troubleshooting suggested by Microsoft, but to no avail.

I'm certain my DVD RW drive is fine because I have been using it to reinstall all my programs successfully. I tried using DVDs that I have been able to back up successfully from the same drive before, so could it be something like a codec I have missing?

How can I tell whether it is a faulty drive or some special file I need?

Thanks a lot

What Make and Model Is your Drive?
How Old Is It?
Is The Firmware Up To Date?

Thanks for your reply Berryone.

It is an NEC DVD_RW ND354A. I rang NEC but as the PC is not NEC they wouldn't talk to me.

I got it in 2006 but I believe they were released in 2005.

When I did MS's instructions within Device Manager I was told the drivers were up to date.

I only first heard of Firmware yesterday I'm afraid (through reading this forum). How do I tell if mine is up to date?

Thanks

Oops I missed the 0 out. It should be:

NEC DVD_RW ND3540A - just found it on your FW website:

http://www.firmwarehq.com/NEC/ND-3540A/files.html

I'll try it though it's dated 2006 (when I got the drive) so it might already be up to date.

OK, so below is what I have to do. Just one snag; I don't understand any of it. I got that I have to open my PC case and that's when my face went a funny gray color...

"Pls note following instructions for update procedure:

Connect drive to secondary IDE channel as Master

Disconnect all slave hardware from IDE secondary Master

Use standard UDMA-2 IDE cable

Update in Windows "Safe Mode"

Under Windows 2000 & XP login as administrator

Update without DMA mode, under Windows XP & 2000 in the device manager - "IDE ATA/ ATAPI controllers", you can switch from DMA to PIO mode

Disconnect all external USB/ FireWire devices.

Deactivate virusscanners, active desktop programs and packetwriting agents

Do not turn off power during the updating process."

Specifically, I did not understand the first 3 points.

I understand the 4th point about Safe Mode, but have never done it so need to research that.

I did understand and can do the last 5 points.

How do I do the first 3 points please, or are there any tutorials that you know of (video preferrably)?

"Connect drive to secondary IDE channel as Master

Disconnect all slave hardware from IDE secondary Master

Use standard UDMA-2 IDE cable"
- Is this in my PC already?

Thanks

I suggest You Get a New Drive. The Laser May Be Going in the NEC you Have. (4 year Old)

Are You In the U.S.? Just a (Yes or No)

I Wouldn't Worry about trying to up-Date the firmware For your Dirve. It probably is Current anyway.

US Only http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827106281

If Your Drive has a Wide Ribbonlike Gray Cable Connected to it It is an IDE Drive.

OEMs Do Not Come with Cables or Even instructions.

No.

(I'm not in the US, but I'm scared to use too many words. LOL! I know what you mean)

I understand you saying it needs replacing, but why did it work fine up until the new Hard disc and Windows reinstall last week?

I also hardly ever use it, only to install programs (occasionally, as most tools are downloaded) and back up a DVD once every two weeks. I don't use it to watch DVDs or listen to music. So 4 years for me is probably like about 4 months for most people!

Also, I've been reading that Verbatim discs with ImgBurn is one of the best ways to make backups play on all players.

So let's say I left replacing the drive as a last resort; would I still need to update the FW if I was going down the route of Verbatim discs with ImgBurn?

Thanks

Mine is an IDE - it says in Device Manager and I've seen those wide ribbon cables.

would this be ok as a replacement?

http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=224081

But is there not a way of telling for sure whether the drive is screwed or not? It seems wasteful to replace the drive without checking everything first.

Do you know how to do those 1st 3 steps I asked about? I might as well try them.

thanks

OK, I stand corrected.

I have done some more research and have found that it very rare for drives to last this long. One person said it's normal for DVD RW drives to go wrong after six months! I guess I was lucky.

So I have found another more modern one below. The only thing I am concerned with is one of the reviews says it has no instructions. Or is just as simple as taking out the old one and plugging the ribbons in the back? I will try and look for a video tutorial.

Can someone please confirm it is ok as an IDE drive and that it will definitely work on XP?

thanks

Looks Quit nice. Everyone seems to Love it.

I Think 3 years for a drive is Fairly Standard.

You Should have No Problems with XP.

Also You Are Getting an OEM (No instructions, No Cables No Extra Software)

Call PLAY (0845-800-1020) and Find out if they Have the RETAIL version (This will Come with Everything You Need to Install)

Replacing a Drive Is Pretty Easy.
