you can rip the dvd's using dvd shrink in dvd 9 mode and burn them using imgburn the key is using dvd-dl dual layer dvd's that is what most studios use and no shrinking or compressions is required I do it all the time. Here are the programs I use and links to get them best thing is they are all free start with ripping usind DVDFab HD decrypter http://www.dvdfab.com/free.htm remeber to set the ripping quality to dvd 9, once this has ripped the dvd to your hard drive use ImgBurn by locating the folder on your hard drive and using this program to burn it to disc http://www.afterdawn.com/software/cdr_so...ols/imgburn.cfm
if you prefer creating an iso image before burning you can use dvd shrink to create one by changing the settings again to dvd 9 with no compression and create an iso then use imgburn to burn it this is a good option as you will have the iso on your pc for future use http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_.../dvd_shrink.cfm there are a great number of tutorials here on Afterdawn under guides for these programs enjoy

if playing on your pc or dvd player dvd format is pretty standard just pick the size of disc you need for the job.

I actually built an htpc its hooked up to my tv plays blu ray, dvd an any file format I choose was not expensive to do either a good BR player costs about two hundred I built the pc for $360 it has Windows Media Center, I rip all my movies to hard drive with dvdfab hd decrypter convert them to divx using auto gk with ac3 digital sound and using spdif out to my surround system get 5.1 dolby sound. I can stream it to any of my other pc's in the house, plus I am able to watch Netflix, Hulu, Crackle, Justin.tv and much more in the tv room with a wireless mouse and keyboard its all great and you can even get a remote control that works with media center.

If space is not a concern, IMHO the simplest way would be to rip in native format and use DVD player software.

yes divx is great you can make the file small or larger the larger the better the quality I like to have them between 1-2gb picture is great and sound. You have many options in autogk, and if you use a psp you can later convert that file to mp4 very easily for viewing on psp.

I am not into any Apple Products sorry they are just overpriced and there are so many alternatives that support many more formats. YOu may want to check out some product reviews at pcworld.com or maximumpc.com but personally I would build a home theatre pc or use an Xbox or ps3 not an appletv device.
