I have a bunch of DVD's that I watch frequently. I've read through some of the FAQ's on the site, but I'm still lost.

What exactly are the steps that I take, if I want to rip single episodes, from DVD and play them on WMP?

I don't care about size. I just want to be able to watch them at the highest possible quality. And I just want to back them up onto a computer, I have no intentions of making duplicate DVD's. My whole reason for doing this is to make watching DVD's on my PC easier.

If you must use WMP, then rip the DVD to the HDD using DVDFab HD Decrypter.

Use DVD Shrink to open the ripped files folder.

Click 'Re-author' and choose an episode (Title) then drag that title from the right pane to the left pane.

Click 'Backup' and save to a new folder.

WMP is fussy about opening DVD files.
You must select 'Any File' from its drop down menu and select one of the .IFO files to start playback.

This shows episode 5 being selected from an episodic DVD.

A better method is to use a better player (VLC or MPC) and rip the episodic disk with the old ripping program DVD Decrypter (no relation to DVDFab).
I find that DVD Decrypter will still work on all the episodic disks that I have tried.
Set it for 'IFO Mode' and select the required title.

Edit:
See this thread for a method of ripping all/selected episodes using DVD Decrypter.

I actually wanted to take it a step further and convert each individual episode into a single file (AVI, MPEG, WMV, ETC.)

So pretty much I pop in a DVD with 5 episodes and convert it into 5 different video files.

Which format has the highest quality?

The highest quality is the source files - mpeg2 - either on the disk or ripped to the hard drive.

Adding to Attar's great advice, source file takes up the most room on your hard drive. That and ease of transferability to another PC through different methods is why many people change their DVD's to .avi files.
Personally, I put multi-episode rips on a DVD-5 (4.7GB)disc to keep the ease of using menu's and regular movies I convert to .avi
