i get this message every now and then. i usually the close the program, reboot and wait. but is there a better way.

I don't know about Vista.
With XP, sometimes a process is preventing access to the burner.
The Task Manager will show another burning program in use (or even 'ImgBurn' running twice).
Ending one process, free up the burner.
Since this is intermittent, I suggest the ImgBurn Forum.
Lightning UK! often posts there.
