Hi,

I'm quite new to ripping DVDs and have been trying to rip a few Friends episodes off my box set. Whenever I use software like DVD Fab and similar, I always get good video but only background sound, no voices. I don't know if it makes any difference but I'm trying to rip them to avi format. Are there any free programs that get both the background sound and the talking?

Thanks

Rip with dvdfab (the main movie and the main audio track only), and the convert to avi using anyone of the tools on this page

I use nero9 since I have the paid for version.

Well I just tried to rip straight to AVI from DVD Fab and it didn't have the sound. The software says it only has one set of audio. The settings I used to rip title 3:

If I'm doing this wrong, what should I be doing? I don't see a way to rip the main movie and audio track only?

Select DVD copy(one tab above ripper) and then select main movie. Once you have selected the correct title/episode rip it to your hard drive. Once it is done ripping, try dvd ripper again, but this time select the folder/image that is on your hard drive and see if that works. if not, I don't know why it wouldn't work.

The AC3 file is 5.1 ?? ....and it's ok when you play the original DVD disk on the PC, but the new AVI file is only playing back the background.
Drag the new AVI file onto MediaInfo and check to see if it's 5.1 or stereo.
If it's stereo, it could be that DVDFab messed up and as keebles suggested it may be best to rip the main movie to a folder on the HDD and use another program to convert to avi (AutoGK perhaps).
If it's 5.1 and DVD Fab merely used it without converting it, it should still play ok.
